Hi!
Ricardo Wurmus <rekado(a)elephly.net> skribis:
Here are a few things that I hope we can improve before then:
- “Wondering what this is? Here are the highlights:” sounds odd. It
comes out of nowhere and I’m left wondering where the “highlights” are
derived from. Since all of the items there are backronyms of “GNU”, I
wonder if we could instead state something to the effect of “What GNU
means to us”.
Makes sense; I made that change.
- There is no mention of processes. The term “Governance” seems
very
formal, yet other than the social contract and the code of conduct
there is no statement on the means by which the project is governed,
e.g. whether we decide things by consensus (or with the consent of
all/most assembly members). Is this something we should have at this
point?
Nope, I’m afraid we don’t have that. The idea is that decision-making
would happen by consensus and vote as a last resort, but this hasn’t
been formalized yet (when COVID struck we were just starting to discuss
formal notions of membership and the likes.)
That’s the next point to look at, but for now I’m afraid there’s nothing
formal we can display.
- Related to that: the “Assembly” links to the mailing list.
Involuntarily I had flashes of gnu-prog-discuss… The preceding
sentence implies that this new home is governed by those who endorse
the social contract (it’s a little more vague than that). Perhaps
this section could be improved to make it clearer who discusses what
on that list and to what end.
“We” in the page is meant to refer to “Assembly members” = “SC
endorsers” (at this point).
But yeah, I see what you mean. To me, “day-to-day operation and the
general direction of our umbrella project” meant (1) things like setting
up this web site, shared Git hosting, setting up the mailing list,
possibly defining coding standards, and (2) deciding on fiscal
sponsorship and/or legal representation of the group, policies that
could apply to member projects (e.g., wrt. source code hosting
platforms), things like that.
I think it’ll become clearer when we start doing things with a practical
impact on our code-related activities.
What do people think?
- ’some of us even know what “CVS” means’ — while I appreciate this
little nod to GNU infrastructure, I think this sentence fragment
disrupts the flow.
True, I’ve removed it.
- the “join us now” link is only available as inline text, which
makes
it a little hard to find. There is no other prominent link to that
page.
I’ve added a couple of links now.
Thanks,
Ludo’.
