Sorry for the late response, I was kind of waiting what happened and
following what GCC would decide on this issue. You probably saw that
they simply declared themselves an autonomous project and rejected RMS
as being part of the Steering Committee.

Somewhat similar the GNU Radio project some months ago simply set up an
association under the umbrella of the SETI Institute.

So keeping the GNU name is possible without being associated with the
FSF or the GNU project.
There are also other projects that are part of GNU, but don't have the
FSF as fiscal sponsor, like GNUstep under the SPI.
